Electrodiagnostic Medicine
If a condition is affecting the way your nerves and muscles work together in your daily life, the electrodiagnostic medicine doctor at Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster can help.
Electrodiagnostic medicine is a subspecialty of medicine utilizing neurophysiologic procedures to diagnose, assess, and recommend treatment for conditions that impair or restrict neurologic, neuromuscular, and muscular systems in the body.
The nervous system plays a vital role in your life, and it is the messaging system of the body. When your nerves and muscles are functioning correctly, your nerves communicate by sending electrical impulses throughout the body which your muscles respond to accordingly. If they aren’t functioning properly, it could be an indication that the electrical signals are either not being sent or received correctly.
Relief With Electrodiagnostic Medicine
Electrodiagnostic medicine is used to determine whether this is caused by a nerve or muscle condition. Board-certified neuromuscular medicine specialist Dr. David Polin will perform either a nerve conduction study (NCS) or an electromyography (EMG) test to find the source of the problem.
Electromyography allows Dr. Polin to measure the electrical activity in your muscles. This is done by placing small electrode needles into your muscle tissue to capture and analyze the muscle's electrical activity.
A nerve conduction study helps Dr. Polin assess the speed of electrical activity throughout your nerves. This test is performed by connecting electro patches to your skin over certain areas of your body. Using the patches, he will stimulate and analyze the electrical impulses of your nerves.
Dr. Polin can use electrodiagnostic medicine to diagnose several conditions, including:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Focal nerve injuries
- Muscle disorders
- Nerve injuries in the back and neck
- Neuromuscular diseases
- Peripheral neuropathies
